ST.VOLODYMYR'S CATHEDRAL (Volodymyrsky) This cathedral is dedicated to Prince Volodymyr, who babtized Rus and was cannonised for his deed. The cathedral took a total of twenty years to build and was finally completed in 1882, it was opened in 1896, when the paintings were finished. The cathedral is seen as a monument glorifying old Rus traditions. The entrance door features bronze sculptures of Princess Olha and Prince Volodymyr. The paintings are by a host of famous artists and include images of Our Lady and other biblical figures. There are two non-religious paintings, "The Baptism of Volodymyr" and "The Baptism of Kyivans". The cathedral is the mother church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyiv Patriarchate. |
