THE MUSEUM OF RUSSIAN ART

The building where the museum is held was built in 1884 as a private house of the famous Ukrainian manufacturer and collector of art Tereshchenko. There is also a collection of Russian art belonging to the building owners. The museum began in 1922 displaying works owned by Tereshchenko, O.Hansen and other families. The collection of art on display is one of the most spectacular on display in the Ukraine. Among many other pieces there is a collection of 13th - 17thg century icons and a collection of 18th - 20th century art. There is also renowned works from D.Levytsky including "Zaporizky Cossacks Writing a Letter to the Turkish Sultan", (1878 - 1891). A statue of I.Repin lies at the museum's entrance
