TARAS SHEVCHENKO LITERARY MEMORIAL HOUSE MUSEUM

In a house typical of Kyiv's early nineteenth century buildings, since 1928, there has been a memorial museum in the name of the outstanding poet, artist and thinker Taras Shevchenko. Enfranchised to the St.Ptersburg Academy of Arts in 1838, he graduated and returned to the Ukraine in 1843. He lived in Kyiv during this time and was soon recognised as a great writer with his works such as Kobzar" and "Naimychka". He was also an admired artist, painting landscapes, portraits and historical works. He was arrested in 1847 for his involvement with revolutionary activities. He was exiled as a soldier to the Orenburg Corps, prohibited to write and draw, and spent ten years there, (1847 - 1857). He wrote many verse while in exile and even managed to work as an artist. In 1861, the whole city of Kyiv took leave to see his remains carried from St.Petersburg to Kaniv. The memorial museum contains Shevchenko's clothes, paintings and photographs among other artifacts.
